Holistic Understanding of Your Basic Human Needs – Air, Water, Nourishment
A n important task in the pursuit of a successful design is to identify your basic human needs and requirements and how to deliver that in a holistic and healthy way. This will also represent what sustainability is and how to keep toxicity levels down. Please note that what I am sharing with you below is a brief overview as a way to bring attention to these items. There is a wealth of information that you can research. I am encouraging you to educate yourself on all of these subtopics – after all, knowledge is power. In the design and architecture industry, there are building standards and certifications that can be used as resources in building a better, more conscious experience that encourages the use of an approach like the International Well Building Institute. Some of these topics are expressed here and would be required for gaining a Well Building Stamp of Approval. It is easier to maintain and improve alignment when our environment is set up to facilitate better health. We are constantly faced with different types of toxicities, which I will explore with you; these things can cause neurotoxicity, which can influence our brain activity and, therefore, our thoughts. I spoke about mind over matter, but in our infancy of learning how to do this, we must first detoxify our mind, body, and spirit so that we can learn what living in an optimal state is like. Once we experience this, we will take note of the effects toxicity has on our systems and then continue to move toward things that support our overall desired state of being.
I will start with Air, Water, and Nourishment. These are all vital life forces that should be our right as humans to obtain cleanly. Unfortunately, they are things that have been polluted, so it is important to self-regulate quality. I will offer tips on how to self-regulate for your own space and a list at the end of this chapter.
Air is a vital life force. It is what oxygenates our blood so that we can fight off disease, and it is what helps us develop physically and cognitively. It is so important, and with current global events, it has become a hot topic in everyone’s homes and beyond. We breathe four times more air than we take in food and water per day. More than 90 percent of our air comes from indoors, and the quality of that air has contributed to many deaths and illnesses across the globe every year. The most common pollutants are related to carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and small particles in the air. These can come from stoves, furnaces, fireplaces, tobacco use, and living in highly congested urban areas with a lot of traffic. Additionally, mold, building materials, paint, furnishings, furniture, fabrics, harsh chemicals in cleaning products, perfumes, air fresheners, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The liver can get bogged down when trying to sift and sort through these things.
